I've been in Southern California since 1994. Something I've only recently discovered is the Hollywood Bowl. It is by far become my favorite outdoor venue. I am lucky enough to have a 4-person box for the Saturday Spectaculars. There is nothing better than sitting out on a warm Saturday evening nibbling on snacks and sipping wine. Dining at The Bowl is an treasure by itself. You can purchase food there, have a gourmet meal delivered to your box or bring your own food (including wine). The latter being my preferred choice.
The day of a concert usually starts early with a trip to Whole Foods. It's fun to walk the aisles and decide what you want to nosh on that evening. Usually an appetizer, main course and dessert. A night at the bowl is really more about dining than it is about eating. You would be amazed at how some folks set their box tables. Table cloths, china and even candles in silver holders are often seen.
Our group packs a cooler and heads off to The Bowl as early as possible. My reasoning is why sit at home when you could be drinking wine under a late afternoon sun. A good tip is freeze a few bottles of water for ice. You keep things cold and have water to drink later on in the evening. I have only recently started to park at The Bowl since I earned Gold Parking privileges. Before I was afforded this perk I would use the Bowlbus Shuttle. Inexpensive and so darn convenient.
Before you know it your meal is over, the sun sets, the empty seats mysteriously fill in and the show begins. For me it really does not matter who is performing because it is all about the experience of a night with friends. The performance is always a bonus. The Hollywood Bowl is a must if you live or are visiting Southern California.
